New Pokémon Alert: Gimmighoul revealed

Everything we know about the newest Pokémon

Welcome back to another week of the latest and greatest Pokémon news to be found all across the wild and wooloo-y web.

Gimme dat Gimmighoul

Another week, another new Pokémon revealed as we close in on the ScarVi release in t-minus 12 days (but who's counting?).

On Friday, Pokémon GO data miners uncovered a new Pokémon file with a 3D model of a little gray alien dude that had a coin on his back. Fast forward to Saturday, and the Pokémon Company revealed a mysterious chest at chest.pokemon.com with a coin counter.

THEN, following Community Day Classic yesterday, Pokéstops turned gold and began dropping coins and our little coin-alien dude made its first appearance in GO. Trainers couldn't catch this new 'mon, but he was visible on the overworld map.

This morning, at 6 a.m. Pacific, the chest counter hit 999 coins, revealing the newest pure ghost-type Pokémon, Gimmighoul, who will be in the upcoming Scarlet and Violet games. But there's a catch. Like Meltan in Let's Go Pikachu & Evee, it seems one of Gimmighoul's forms will only be obtainable in GO. Here's what we know:

Gimmighoul (Chest Form)

These Gimmighoul hide inside sturdy treasure chests. While this provides them with a solid defense, the treasure chest’s weight causes Gimmighoul to move slowly, making travel difficult. It is not uncommon for Chest Form Gimmighoul to be mistaken for an antique and taken home or sold to an antique store.

When Gimmighoul senses a person or Pokémon draw near, it ambushes them. It then uses ghost energy to control its target, forcing them to collect coins. Because it often hides in warehouses, shop corners, and other places people and Pokémon don’t frequent, it tends to keep persistent control of those it does manage to encounter.

There are hints that Gimmighoul may evolve after you collect 999 (you read that right) coins dropped by its roaming form, according to an accompanying video featuring Professor Willow of GO and Mr. Jacq of Scarlet and Violet.

Gimmighoul (Roaming Form)

It seems that Gimmighoul has a second form called Roaming Form Gimmighoul. This kind of Gimmighoul doesn’t hide in a treasure chest. It’s small, carries a single coin on its back, and can be found hiding all over Paldea. However, since they run away as soon as a person approaches, it seems not a single Trainer in Paldea has ever managed to catch one.

So there you have it. From the sound of things, expect Gimmighoul (Roaming Form) to make an appearance in GO sometime in 2023, when linking with Scarlet/Violet is live, according to an accompanying announcement. Unlike Let's Go Pikachu & Evee, you will NOT be able to send Pokémon directly to Scarlet and Violet, but will need to utilize HOME.

Here's hoping we don't wait 6 months for HOME compatibility (again).
