Everything Pokemon from yesterday's Nintendo Direct
Unpacking the Hidden Treasures of Area Zero
After yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, we’ve got more unpacking to do than all those Machokes helping you move to Littleroot Town when your dad skipped out to chill at his gym. (We’re on to you, Norman).
Here’s this week’s rundown (estimated read time, 4 minutes):
Return of the Poké King: Detective Pikachu
New Hidden Treasures of Area Zero DLC trailer
Gimmighoul Tera Raid event info
Detective Pikachu Returns
Before yesterday’s Nintendo Direct there was buzz going around that perhaps a Detective Pikachu 2 movie would be announced. Instead, we got the long-awaited game sequel, coming October 6, 2023.
The game reunites Detective Pikachu (who still loves coffee) and Tim Goodman (who still loves red hoodies) in Ryme City, to solve a whole host of new mysteries. Mewtwo is there. And… that’s about all we know.
I didn’t spot any Gen 9 Pokémon in the trailer, for what it’s worth. This announcement makes me wonder why in tarnation we can’t get voice acting in the mainline games. Just saying. 🤷
All the Hidden Treasures in the latest DLC trailer
For the first time since April, we’ve got DLC news! Footage from both The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk kicked off yesterday’s Nintendo Direct. No specific release date was given outside of “Fall 2023” for Teal Mask and “Winter 2023” for Indigo Disk. I’m gonna keep believing that “Winter 2023” means before January 2024.
Before we HM08 (Dive) into this, here’s the trailer.
New People in Hidden Treasures of Area Zero
Cyrano (Indigo Disk) - This suave, sharp-dressed dude is the director of Blueberry Academy. He invites you to his institution as an exchange student and is an old pal of Director Clavell (but definitely not Clive). Given the fact that he built an underwater biosphere globe, I think he’s going for a Dr. Malcolm/Jurassic Park thing. His tie appears to be Aegislash themed.
Lacey (Indigo Disk) - A sophomore at Blueberry Academy. Seems to be Nemona’s counterpart as she shows you around when you first arrive and has battling skills that are “nothing to scoff at.” Pssh, I’ll show you battling skills that are nothing to scoff at, Lacey.
Carmine (Teal Mask) - Welcomes you to Kitakami. Proceeds to threaten you to eat dirt, aka challenges you to a battle. Gives off some serious Klara/Avery vibes from Isle of Armor. Tells you about the “Loyal Three” (more on them later).
Kieran (Teal Mask) - Nicer than Carmine, stutters. Could they be siblings? Introduces you to the Festival of Masks.
New/Returning Pokémon in Hidden Treasures of Area Zero
The Loyal Three: Munkidori (left), Okidogi (center) and Fezandipiti (right) were previously announced, but we also learned about their new Toxic Chain ability. When one of them hits an opponents with a move, the opponent may become badly poisoned. Guessing it’s related to the purple/pink scarf, headband, and bow they’re wearing?
Serebii has a list of which Pokémon will return in Teal Mask and which Pokémon will return in Indigo Disk.

New places in Hidden Treasures of Area Zero
Mossui Town - A quaint mountain village in the land of Kitakami that serves as the base of operations during your school trip here. East of the village is Kitakami Hall, where the Festival of Masks takes place.
(It’s explicitly stated that Kitakami is NOT part of Paldea, and in the trailers we’ve yet to see the player Terastalize their Pokémon or ride Koraidon/Miraidon there.)
The Terarium - A gigantic underwater biosphere divided into four different ecosystems featuring different Pokémon. Has an artificial sky projected onto the ceiling and walls that changes to reflect weather and the time of day.
(Note that terrarium is spelled with two Rs whereas THIS “terarium” is spelled with one R. That leads this Cooltrainer to think that Tera as in Tera Type and Tera Raid is the root word here, which also fits with Terapagos being featured in this portion of the story.)
Gimmighoul Raid Info + new Mystery Gift
Like sugary sprinkling on top of a malasada, Scarlet & Violet players got one last treat during yesterday’s direct. Well, two, sort of.
The latest 5-star raid, Chest Form Gimmighoul, was announced, running Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at 8:00 a.m. PDT to Sunday, July 2, 2023, at 4:59 p.m. PDT. They’ll appear in a variety of Tera Types and are also shiny unlocked, which is the only way you can get yourself a shiny, haunted treasure chest Pokémon or shiny Gholdengo.
But raider beware: it’s impossible to tell a shiny from a normal and Tera raids don’t do shiny animations or sound cues so… good luck?
Legit, HOW do you supposed to know this is shiny? #PokemonScarletViolet#NintendoSwitch

Mystery Gift Codes
If you’re looking for treasure of another variety, you can get x10 Nuggets, x10 Rare Candy and x1 (yep, just one) Friend Ball, by entering code TREASUREHUNT by July 31.
And, while somewhat less spectacular, you can get the TMs for Bulldoze and Rockslide by entering code PLAYD0UBLE by June 30. (Please, control your enthusiasm).
Random encounters around the internet
Mega Rayquaza announced for Pokémon GO Fest in August (there’s a catch to Mega Evolving the sky snake, however).
That’s right, Pokémon cards are old enough to be on Antiques Roadshow (and, in case you’ve been in Rock Tunnel for the past four years, they’re worth some serious $$$).
This Pokémaniac is fusing Gen 1 Pokémon on Reddit in a most unnatural way.
