Everything we know about Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
Happy June and good luck with your shiny hunting and raiding on this, the second day of Pokémon GO Fest 2022. Keep your Crawdaunts cool, kids.
Before the big breakdown, don't forget Hisuian Snow episode 2 premieres on YouTube this week, June 8th.
MOAR Scarlet and Violet details revealed
If you hadn't guessed, this week's newsletter is all about the second trailer and ensuing info released earlier this week about ScarVi, Scarlett Johannson's first foray into the Pokémon World... uh, I mean Gen 9.
First thing, if you just came out from under a rock and haven't watched the trailer, check it out in it's pure, unadulterated form roight hurr.
If you HAVE seen the trailer and are looking for a solid breakdown/analysis video, check out 34 Things I hate about you You Missed in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, by Austin John Plays.
With that out of the way, let's see what we gots from the official Pokémon website:
Release Date: November 18, 2022
The official ScarVi website is broken down into 3 parts:
New Pokémon
Open world info (yes, that's right)
Meet the characters.
New Pokemon
Aside from new details about the starters, we also got names and a few details about the box legendaries as well as three NEW Pokémon. I could go through and copy/paste all of the dex entries and other info, but instead I'm just going to send you to the site to check them out for yoself and give some of my thoughts.
Before the latest info, Sprigatito was far and away my starter choice. Now, the field has evened out a bit with Fuecoco and even the little Elvis duck, Quaxly. I'm going to need to see evolutions before making the call.
Fun fact: Excluding remakes, ScarVi will be the first Gen to feature Venonat in the regional dex since Gold/Silver. All hail the purple bug!
New legendaries
The legendaries, Koraidon (Scarlet) and Miraidon (Violet) look great, too. If you take a closer look, you'll see there's a definite motorcycle tire vibe with the Scarlet legendary and a sort of Tron bike style with the Violet legendary. Given Spain's affinity with Formula 1 racing (and the fact that Pokéstops look like 7-11s now, myself and many others are wondering if that theme will be prevalent in the games).

Not much else is known about Koraidon and Miraidon right now, except that they also point to a theme of past and future. One scholarly chap on r/Pokemon pointed out that Korai means "ancient" and Mirai means "future" in Japanese. We'll explore this duality more when with the new professors (yep, plural). Their designs point to an ancient and futuristic duality too.

New Pokémon
Brace yourself, we've got ANOTHER Pika-clone in the form of Pawmi, an electric mouse (I'm not making this up) that builds up electricity in its heeks and by rubbings its forepaws together. Don't ask me why we needed this, but we got it.

Do not fret, intrepid Pokemon trainer, for the NEXT reveal is the penultimate pig Pokémon, the heart of our hearts that Spoink could only wish to be. I present to you LECHONK. This little piggy ain't going to market any time soon and is anything but the "normal" typing they gave him. The hype is real. Who's going to beat the game with an entire team of these little baconators?

And, last but not least, we have Scarlet and Violet's version of Sobble, a new anxious, teary-eyed little mite that is better shown in meme form than anything else. Smoliv is a Grass/Normal type and seems perpetually uneasy.

Hello (open) world
We asked for it. We got a sniff it Sword/Shield and a taste in Legends Arceus. But we needed more. Now, "the Pokémon series takes a new evolutionary step, allowing you to explore freely in a richly expressed open world."
You read that right, and that's not all:
"You can experience a new style of adventure, with a world that you’re free to explore at your leisure and not in an order dictated by the story. You will, of course, journey to hone your skills as a Pokémon Trainer, but many more discoveries and stories await you. Meet a variety of people and Pokémon, and adventure in the world of Pokémon the way you want to."
And better yet, there will be some version of multiplayer, allowing up to four players to adventure together. Based on what's been shown so far, this seems like a much chonkier (see what I did there) experience than raid dens in Sword and Shield and *may* even include a local feature. Here's that 7-11 I was talking about:

Meet the characters
For the first time ever, we'll have version-exclusive professors, similar to the version-exclusive gym leaders in Sword/Shield. Continuing the theme of past and future, Professor Sada is dressed like a Victoria Secret cavewoman while Professor Turo looks like he just escaped from Tron. According to the site "Each professor is carrying out research into lore passed down in the region."
Our same clever r/Pokemon researcher also pointed out that Pasado means "past" in Spanish and Futuro means "future." Perhaps one or the other will became the main villain, depending on which version you choose? I just hope we don't have to sit through more arguing dialog like Irida and Adaman gave us in Legends Arceus.
A new rival?
Last, but not least, we have Nemona, our friend and experienced trainer who will guide us on our adventures. Given that they specifically mention "she's not the best at throwing Poké Balls," I hope that means we'll continue the Legends Arceus catching mechanic.
The most interesting feature of Nemona is a bracelet, forearm sleeve she wears on her right hand. I'll wager anything this has something to do with the new battle gimmick.
